Daddy It Hurts: A Poem About Child Abuse

One of the most difficult aspects of working the Emergency Room is seeing abuse. We see domestic violence (spouse beating), rape and the most difficult of all, child abuse. Someone sent me this poem that I wanted to share with you – and even though you have may have seen it before, I encourage you to read it again. Child abuse is one of those things which is 100% preventable. Maybe you might know someone that you could help and maybe this might encourage you to do something about it.

———————————————————————

My name is Chris

I am three,

My eyes are swollen

I cannot see,

I must be stupid

I must be bad,

What else could have made

My daddy so mad?

I wish I were better

I wish I weren’t ugly,

Then maybe my mommy

Would still want to hug me.

I can’t do a wrong

I can’t speak at all

Or else I’m locked up

All day long.

When I’m awake I’m all alone

The house is dark

My folks aren’t home

When my mommy does come home

I’ll try and be nice,

So maybe I’ll just get

One whipping tonight.

I just heard a car

My daddy is back

From Charlies bar

I hear him curse

My name is called

I press myself

Against the wall

I try to hide

From his evil eyes

I’m so afraid now

I’m starting to cry

He finds me weeping

Calls me ugly words,

He says its my fault

He suffers at work

He slaps and hits me

And yells at me more,

I finally get free

And run to the door

He’s already locked it

And I start to bawl,

He takes me and throws me

Against the hard wall

I fall to the floor

With my bones nearly broken,

And my daddy continues

With more bad words spoken,

‘I’m sorry!’, I scream

But its now much to late

His face has been twisted

Into a unimaginable shape

The hurt and the pain

Again and again

O please God, have mercy!

O please let it end!

And he finally stops

And heads for the door

While I lay there motionless

Sprawled on the floor

My name is Chris

I am three,

Tonight my daddy

Murdered me

And you can help

Sickens me to the soul,

And if you read this

and don’t pass it on

I pray for your forgiveness

Because you would have to be

One heartless person

To not be affected

By this Poem

And because you are affected,

Do something about it!

  • Children ages 0-3 are the most likely to experience abuse. About 1 in 50 U.S. infants are victims of nonfatal child abuse or neglect in a year, according to the first national study of the problem in that age group done by the CDC  along with The Federal Administration for Children and Families.
  • 1,500 children die every year from child abuse and neglect. That is just over 4 fatalities every day.
  • 79% of the children killed are younger than 4.

I know – I would have appreciated a warning before reading that kind of poem at work. Tears immediately. Important though to talk about something that affects so many. Keep up the good work. (And I’ll be hugging my 2 year old a million extra times today too).

  3. Tunde Says:

Yes, the most heart breaking cases are the children who are being abused.

We use to have this poem posted at our nursing lounge.

  4. Lyndsey Says:

But hey, every little bit helps

when i read this peom i am so sad i just image it happening to me (but hopefully it never will) i feel so sorry for every one that has parents who do not care for them. someone at school showed me this peom today during class and if my teacher did not call my name i would of started crying. when one of my friends showed me that peom again when we wre walking home i started crying until i got home. i am still so sad from 2 days ago. please do not forget i feel sorry for everyone that had experice.

  9. Brian Says:

I really appreciate this poem and am 100% against child abuse and do not have a care in the world about anyone who is guilty of this most of heinous crimes, however, I do have a prob with the way the author addresses his/her readers. I understand that you are very passionate about your cause here, but you need to think twice about your way of getting your message around. Don’t go passing judgement based on assumptions that no one has passed your Spam onward. Like I said I am 100% in support of the subject at hand, but I think you got a little distasteful and showed a lack of class in your last sentence.

  11. sammi Says:

if ne 1 ever attemted 2 do this to my 3 yr old son id have them arrested for attemptin a child murder!!!!

  12. Mother of Three Says:

This poem didn’t made me sad, it pissed me off. We see stories of this in the news daily. I pray for the Police officers that have to arrest them because the restrain that they have in wanting to beat the crap out of them but not doing it is amazing. God takes care of them, the child AND the abuser. Just remember, some children aren’t lucky enough to die, WHAT I MEAN is that God takes their pain away when they die. Some children have to deal with it for an eternity…..

People, dont hesitate to speak up if you hear someone crossing the line with a child, you may be their only voice.

  13. Stacey. Says:

  15. Kirk Prosser Says:

    Holy COW!

I saw the heading and IMMEDIATELY thought about being abused my father! As it opened and I saw some of the lines… the floodgates opened and I became overwhelmed with fear, anxiety, pain, and a myriad of other emotions. Even now as I sit here and type this I can remember being bent over the arm of the couch begging my father to stop sodomizing me because it hurt so much. He continued doing what he was doing as he pushed me further down into the couch while he warned me to shut up and be still, he wanted to finish before the rest of the family got home.

I am sitting here crying, reliving one of the many horrible memories of my past……..

My family: 3 older brothers and 3 older sisters plus myself was sexually, physically, mentally, and verbally abuse by father until my youngest (older sister)signed herself into a psychiatric center and exposed the abuse. I was 15 at the time. My mother was a victim as well; she took many beatings in front of us – for us…. Two consecutive 15 year sentences – 15 years served. Released in 1999 at 62 years old a level 3 offender. Died alone this year with the forgiveness of 4 of his children….

  16. nicole Says:
